About
Tim Murton
Tim came to Canada in 1979 from his native England armed with a B.Sc. in construction technology; after a brief career
in mining engineering, Tim jumped ship and enrolled at the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) in Toronto. He
spent his third year in the off campus programme, studying in Florence and Paris. After leaving OCAD, Tim spent 18 years
in the Toronto film industry, accumulating scenic art credits on over 40 feature films in Canada, England and New Zealand.
Tim is now working as an independent fine artist, pursuing his life's ambition of making the the world a more beautiful and
interesting place. Tim's painting style ranges from impressionism to photo-realism, but his work is always inspired
by the qualities of light. Tim's paintings have been exhibited at Toronto's Harbourfront, The KW Art Gallery, The Harbinger
Gallery (Waterloo) and the Elora Centre for the Arts, among others, and are in many private collections throughout Canada,
England, Europe and the U.S. You can currently see Tim's work at the MacDonald Stewart Art Centre in Guelph, the Art
Gallery of Windsor, the Karger Gallery in Elora and in his home studio by appointment.
Tim started the Twilight Zoo ten years ago as a novel Halloween decoration for the family. He made four
hooded ghouls out of wire and paper and hung them in the trees so that they would move in the breeze - and was amazed
to find that he had made a big hit with the locals! Every year since its humble beginning, Tim has added to the Zoo
collection and as the menagerie has increased, so have the number of people travelling to see the spectacle. Over the
years, Tim's wire and paper sculptures have become a regular part of the Elora calendar. The kids go back to school
and Tim starts building the show. He most loves when the school buses go by and he hears them shouting through the windows...
"Awesome!" The kids know him as the Monster Guy, but he's really just a fine artist painter having a
break.
